Exciting August Stargazing Events!

August is a great month for stargazing, with several celestial events to look forward to. Saturn will be highly visible and can be seen low along the eastern horizon around 9 p.m. The moon will also have some interesting encounters with other celestial objects, such as Saturn on August 3rd, the Pleiades star cluster and Jupiter on August 9th, and the star Antares on August 24th. The Perseids meteor shower will also occur throughout the month, with its peak occurring on August 12th and 13th. This year’s shower is expected to be especially impressive due to the dark sky provided by the new moon. Lastly, on August 30th, there will be a rare “super blue moon” event, where there will be a second full moon in the month along with the moon being at its closest point to Earth. This event only occurs around once every 10 years. More stargazing tips can be found on NASA’s website.

Dr. Elias Aydi, a PhD research associate, is the organizer of the public viewings in collaboration with MSU undergrand and postgrad astronomers
